Guide to Using Fonts to Publish a Book for Free

Guide to Using Fonts

Fonts

We suggest you restrict to general used fonts like Times New Roman & Arial. However, for the body text of your chapters, we suggest you use the following fonts

  1. Garamond
  2. Palatino Linotype
  3. Baskerville Old Face
  4. Centaur
You may also try using other fonts, and see what type of look you prefer.

Can I use fonts available online?

Not all fonts you find online will embedded text in your book. This may happen due to technical or legal reason. It can also be that you have not obtained the proper licence to use the font.

Note: You may find some fonts online as a free download, but it's not necessary that it is free to be used for your book. We suggest you do your research before using any free downloadable fonts. It is your responsibility to ensure that your content doesn't violate laws or copyright, trademark, or any other rights.

How to check if the font I use can be embedded

To find out whether the font you plan to use will embed properly or not, do the following steps.

  1. Set a few pages of your book with the font.
  2. Then try to create a PDF file for just those pages.
  3. Open the PDF file on Adobe Acrobat.
  4. Go to Files -- Properties -- Fonts Tab
All fonts that you have used appear here. They all have to be "Embedded" or "Embedded Subset."

Book Templates for Fonts
By default, all our templates that you download have been structured to embedded fonts. So that when you use a font that you are authorised to and have a license to use (including free to use fonts) it will be embedded in your file and you will not have any issues in creating your pdf for the book.

Size of Fonts

Your text should be clear enough so that readers can enjoy reading your book. To help ensure your text is clear, please check the following:
  1. Text is at least 8-points in size
  2. The text doesn't blend into the background
Be sure to check the text in all parts of your book, including body text, the caption of images, tables, maps etc
